The Twelve Tribes (Sons) of Israel

The sons of Jacob are Israelites (Num. 25: 14, Lev. 24: 10 - 11). Jacob's name was changed to "Israel" (Gen. 32: 28, 35: 10). So, in Scriptures, the sons of Jacob are called the children of Israel, and the 12 tribes of Israel also. I like to call them Jews, Hebrews, the children of Israel, or the 12 tribes of Israel. (Read Gen. 29: 31 - 35, 30: 1 - 24, 39: 7 - 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 46: 1 - 7, 8 - 27, 49: 1 - 28, Ex. 1: 9, 2: 23 - 25, 24: 4, Rev. 7: 1 - 8.). There are some individuals who do not agree with calling them Jews. They say that the Jews were in Jerusalem and were of the tribe of Judah only. Others say that the tribes of Judah and Benjamin were called Jews because they lived in Jerusalem. Mordecai, while in the land of Media and Persia, was called a "Jew" in the book of Esther. He was of the tribe of Benjamin (Esther 2: 5, 3: 4, 9: 31, 10: 3). (See also Esth. 3: 6, 13, 4: 3, 16, 8: 7, 9: 16.). Abraham was a Hebrew (Gen. 14: 13). Paul himself said he was a Jew. He was born in Tarsus and later lived in Jerusalem for awhile. (Read Acts 22: 3, Phil. 3: 5, II Cor. 11: 22. See also Rom. 11: 1, 2: 28 - 29.). One could come to a conclusion that because Paul and Mordecai, who were of the tribe of Benjamin, were Jews, (according to Paul's testimony, and Scripture), one then could assume that those other 11 tribes of Jacob would be Jews also. The Israelites/Jews are called Hebrews as well. (See Gen. 40: 15, 41: 12, Ex. 1: 16, 19, 2: 6 - 10, 11 - 15, 3: 18, 4: 5, 5: 3, 9: 1, Deut. 15: 12.).
